January - SOLD
A stitched sketch of changing weather across the mudflats. Light pierces through the dark rain clouds and shimmers on the wet surfaces of the mud and vegetation. Bright blue sky is also breaking through. A range of fabrics include transfer prints, metallics, satins, silks and sheers. Layers of torn and cut raw edged fabrics have been machine stitched with different metallic threads.
February
A stitched sketch of Wakering Creek. Cool colours and shimmering slithers of reflected surfaces after the rain shows a typical cold day in February when the cloud is low and the light is fading. Nets, sheers and hand painted fabrics have been layered and machine quilted to show the calmness of the chilled winter afternoon.

Stitched sketch of magnolias at Wisley. Heat transfer printed fabrics that have a sheen to represent the waxy petals of the magnolia flowers. Pink, yellow and purple blossoms are in the background.

Stitched sketch of tulips in Prittlewell Square, Southend-on-Sea. Heat transfer printed statins have been used to represent the glossy petals of tulips. Sheers have been overlayed to show the changing colours of leaves around the tulips.

Hollyhocks have flowers that group together along very tall, spindly stems. Deep greens and purples have been used for the background to set off the bright coloured blooms.

This quilt is the first in a series of 4 studies of local Essex ditches at different times of the year. Hand painted and dyed fabrics have been raw edge appliquéd to represent the rich colours of late summer and early Autumn.

This quilt in the Essex ditch series was inspired by the evening light on ice and snow. Reference was made to sketches and photos taken a few years ago when December was a cold month in Essex
Journal Quilts 2014
January
This quilt was inspired by a visit to the salt mines near Krakow. The miners made chandeliers from salt crystals and when lit they sparkle in the gloom of the underground cavern.Heat transfer paint has been used on silver fabric and a covering of sheer material. Metallic threads have then been hand and machine stitched through the layers.
February
This quilt represents a sculpture that was made from salt carved in the salt mine near Krakow. Miners made murals and 3D objects in their spare time after a day's work.Heat transfer paint has been applied and machine quilting has been stitched through layers of silver and sheer fabrics.
March
This composition was completed after a visit to Warley Place. Ivy has grown thickly around the trunk of this tree in the garden. Heat transfer paint has been applied to a synthetic satin and threads have been couched onto the surface to create more texture to the machine quilting. Hand stitching and the layering of nets completes the study.
April
​The house no longer exists at Warley Place and only a few ruins are left of the conservatory and kitchen. In the garden an old gate stands rusted and broken. Heat transfer paint and machine quilting have been used to recreate the scene.

This view of Dawes Heath shows the bluebell wood after the rain. There is a coolness and stillness under the trees. Hand painted fabrics and lace with nets have been raw edge appliquéd and machine stitches.

This view across the estuary at Thorpe Bay, Essex is at sunset. Metallic and hand painted fabrics have been raw edge appliquéd with machine stitching.

This view across the creek is in Great Wakering, Essex. Metallic fabrics and hand painted fabrics have been collaged and machine stitched partly with metallic threads.
September
Amsterdam Red Lights. This design is inspired by the red light area where the windows and buildings are lit by a red glow. Heat transfer dyes and crayons are blended together and show the bright orange reds through to the blue and purple reds in the shadows.
October
Amsterdam Evening. Heat transfer dyes and crayons are used to make a sketch of the tall buildings by the canal that glow in the evening light. The tree, now without leaves, allows the viewer to see the details of the houses behind. Free machine quilting is used to add detail to the sketch.
November
Amsterdam Autumn. Warm colours of the autumn trees are painted like watercolours using heat transfer dyes and crayons blended together. Cooler colours are used in the foreground to contrast with the bright colours of the trees and buildings lit in the distance.
December
Amsterdam Reflections. Watercolour techniques used with heat transfer dyes to show the range of colours that are reflected in the canal in the evening when the lights are on and sparkle on the moving water. Free machine quilting is used to draw in the details.
Journal Quilts 2013
January
This is the first quilt for January based on the city of Havana.
It has been inspired by the neglected area of the city and torn, painted fabrics have been layered and stitched together by hand and machine. The edges have been left ragged in keeping with the theme.
February
This is the journal quilt for February. It is based on Havana and is inspired by the bright, vibrant colour of wall art that can be found in the city.
March
This is a journal quilt for March. The city of Havana is well known for its love of music and salsa dancing. The curved shapes of the quilted background represent the movement and rhythm of the dance.
April
This is a journal quilt for April. Streets in Havana are rarely empty. However, this scene is of early morning after a heavy rainfall and there is a cool and calmness for a short time. The fabrics have been painted and some patches left without colour to show the light reflecting on the wet surfaces.
May
This quilt for May is based on Barcelona and it is inspired by Gaudi's fantasy architecture. The fluid lines of his designs are echoed by the cloud formation. Transfer paint, crayons and pastels have been used with free machine quilting.
June
This quilt for June is inspired by Gaudi's mosaic designs in Parc Guel in Barcelona. Transfer paint, crayons and pastels have been used with free machine quilting.
July
This quilt for July is inspired by the rooftop of Casa Batllo on Barcelona. I drew with pastel over a collage of painted papers, photographed the image and printed it onto transfer paper.
It was then heat pressed onto fabric layered with nets. Free machine quilting completes the composition.

This quilt is inspired by the seafront on Barcelona. I drew with pastel over a collage of painted papers and coloured tissue. The image was then photographed and printed onto transfer paper. It was then heat pressed onto fabric and layered with nets. Free machine quilting completes the composition.
September
This quilt was inspired by a view of Berlin at dusk in the rain. The artificial lighting is strong and gives colour to raindrops and wet surfaces. The background has been painted with heat transfer dyes and hand and machine stitching draws in the details.
October
This image is based on photos and drawings made inside the Reichstag Building in Berlin. The fiery colours of the sunset fill the glass dome and reflect onto the mirrored installation in the centre. Heat transfer dyes have been covered with nets and gauzes to create different tones.
November
This quilt was inspired by reflections in the roof windows of the spectacular mainline railway station in Berlin called Hauptbahnhof. Images from adjoining windows, the platform, train and glass lift structure below created interesting patterns and shapes that I have tried to recreate with dyes, nets and layered, transparent fabrics with metallic threads.
December
This quilt is based on a small area of the Berlin wall. The surface is rich in colour, texture and mark making and fabric dyes, nets, raw edge appliqué, hand and machine stitching attempt to recreate these qualities.
